📸 Do you know Francesca Woodman? This week she's my featured female artist. I found some inspiration for one of my songs in her work. Sadly, she didn't live a very long life but managed to create an oeuvre of over 800 self-portraits: Like the American photographer and filmmaker Cindy Sherman, whose work consists primarily of photographic self-portraits, depicting herself in many different contexts and as various imagined characters, Woodman used herself as a model. I love the anecdote that when she was asked by a friend why she obsessively photographed herself, (who perhaps found it oddly narcissistic), Woodman replied:

“It’s a matter of convenience, I am always available.”

Whereas the colours of October in Europe or on the East-coast are golden; oranges, burned siennas, reds and toasted browns, November turns into a dense, greenish black, speckled with unfortunate yellow. Death in disguise…Cold on the loom.

Another lovely view of my villa that overlooks the river Elbe. T’was cold, wet and dark this afternoon but the poddle (can you spot her?) didn’t mind.

🍂🍁Today I walked to the university campus and renewed my library card. Outside on the pavement of one of the major ring roads are small square bronze blocks, exactly the size of the paving stones. There are six of these sites on that street. Each “Stolperstein”, which means directly translated a trip-you-up-stone or stumbling stone, is engraved with names - here it’s members of the Jewish Cohen family. Located in front of the apartment building that specific family lived in. 🥲 Every year, on November 9 the brass stones - or plaques - are polished and a candlelight Virgil is held, with 🌹 roses and candles 🕯 to commemorate the victims of the Nazi regime. 🙏🏻♥️ You may have seen them in other cities like Berlin as well…

Hard to believe that I took this picture at circa

Hard to believe that I took this picture at circa 8:30 am. It already has that frozen look of December… This is the river Elbe in Hamburg that had already this morning trod over its banks - like I could see from the sandy ripples and the debris left behind. The water looked grey and fierce and later in the day it rained upon us (poddle and I) hard. Beautiful but daunting— weather and times…

I have posted some of her images in my blog post "The Butterfly". Especially these stills with an anonymous female and butterflies were very suiting; incredibly atmospheric, slightly mysterious and enigmatic like most of her sensuous work is – as you can see here. Merci bien!
