Urban Survival

Urban Survival                              music & lyrics Frances Livings © 2010

Oh, is this just another lonely week, just another lonely week?
Just another lonely week?
Oh, is this just another lonely week, just another lonely week?
Just another lonely week?

1. London, New York, Tokyo
it doesn’t matter where you go
Berlin, Paris or Shanghai
metropolis, skyscraper high
you memorize the city’s bible
learn to be streetwise
your compass needle’s on survival
to simply stay alive, to simply stay alive –

2. Boundaries are drawn in chalk
head up high, you stride not walk
The beat is fast, roller-coaster life
turn your back on it,
it will stab you like a knife
always scrambling, running, chasing
it’s the eternal rat-race you’re facing
‘Cause yet again, the rent is due
the rent is due but my life is too

the rent is due but my life is too
the rent is due but my life is too!

Oh, is this just another lonely week? Just another lonely week?
Just another lonely week of – urban survival?

Oh, is this just another lonely week? Just another lonely week?
Just another lonely week of – urban survival?

Reading signals, reading signs
try’n to read between the lines
fortune cookies – still no luck?
but I’m tellin’ you – you better not give up!

Feel like a cat on a hot tin-roof
always prowling for money, looking for proof
that my life’s worth – more than survival,
survival, survival, survival… oh, oh… urban survival

London, New York, Tokyo..

Oh, is this just another lonely week of… Reading Signals…

Reading signals, reading signs…

Never give up, never give up – oh!
Never give up, never give up – oh!
Never give up, never give up – oh!
Urban survival!

Spoken Word / bird part:

Research has suggested that song birds
– to survive life in the city – must hit higher notes
so they’ve learned to pitch different frequencies,
they’ve evolved and sing much higher
than the birds in the countryside.
We can hear the urban songbirds sing – day for day –
in the city’s constant mumble.
That’s why there is now a division between those species
that can make themselves heard
and those whose songs drown
in urban noisiness.
Amazingly they’ve changed
and can still be heard
it’s a true survivor,
the urban jungle bird

Just another lonely week
of cruel urban survival
spirits low but profile up
I’ve seen too many rivals

Feel like a cat on a hot tin-roof
always prowling for money,
looking for proof
that my life’s worth –
more than survival, survival

Reading signals, reading signs
try to read between the lines
Fortune cookies – still no luck?
but I’m tellin’ you – to never give up!

Never give up, never give up – oh!
Never give up, never give up – oh!
Never give up, never give up – oh!

Urban survival!
