Edvard Munch & Maria Lassnig – an unusual pairing in an exhibition covering so many topics, emotions and layers of two truly lived lives. So let me guide you along through this intriguing show, comprising an almost overwhelming number of 200 paintings, works on paper, sculptures, films and photographs, presented on two floors of the Galerie der Gegenwart, ranging from intimate and rarely seen sketches to famous paintings such as Munch’s Madonna (1893–1895) and lesser-known key works, such as Traditionskette (1983) by Maria Lassnig.

GETTING THERE: Either by car or by S-Bahn S1 to Klein Flottbek/Botanischer Garten. You can then walk along the Jürgensallee, turn right on Baron Voght Straße and then cross over into the Jenisch Park at Hochrad.

GETTING THERE: Unless you would like to drive, taking the train is a very easy and affordable option from Hamburg especially if you have got a monthly “Deutschland ticket” subscription.

FEES: The cost of the art tour is €40 per person and €35/pp for AWCH members. It includes the entrance ticket to the Giacometti exhibition (with which you can also see the permanent collections of the Kunsthalle on that day). Please let me know beforehand if you are eligible for a concession.
