✨ I was just working on my memoir and thinking about a painting by Van Gogh, when I googled and came across this: Isn't it magical!? The Dutch artist and designer Daan Roosegaarde created this beautiful and innovative, kilometre long glowing bike path that, when illuminated at night by glowing pebbles and LEDs, looks like Van Gogh’s famous Starry Night painting.

✨ It is located in Brabant, the Dutch county where Van Gogh was born and raised. The swirling, glowing forms on the path’s surface will help bicyclists stay on track when they ride at night.

✒️ I was just working on some song lyrics and playing with the word "barnacle" (as a synonym for an unpleasant, clingy attachment) and came across another word, "skeuomorph".

🤯 What the hell is that...?

🧐 Skeuomorph can be defined as a kind of ode to its ancestors in terms of design. One website uses the example of maple syrup, "often sold in a glass bottle with a small handle that serves no discernable utilitarian purpose. This is a relic of the time when maple syrup came in jugs and the handles were large enough to be useful. This phenomenon describes a product feature persisting when incorporated in a new environment, in which it no longer serves a function."

😁 The article goes on to explain that "these skeuomorphs can bizarrely become desired features of the product in question. Buyers of maple syrup want to see a small handle on the bottle. It serves no purpose, but it is what consumers have come to expect. Blue jeans are no longer made for working men who carry pocket watches, but buyers of blue jeans want a watch pocket all the same... even though they have no idea of the purpose it serves and have no use for it."

🗿 SCULPTURE / LAND ART... there are some amazing installations and pieces in the world. Especially in places where there's a lot of space, like also in the US and these are in Qatar! And although the lineage dates back centuries, Land art reached its zenith as a movement in the 1960s and ’70s, when artists ventured into deserts in the American West and started drawing lines and carving into the earth. Here are amazing pieces by contemporary artists! Have a look! Which one is your favourite?

🐪 My personal favourite is the one by Olafur Eliasson, Shadows travelling on the sea of the day (2022), in which he created his cluster of mirrored disc sculptures in the desert to the form of Bedouin settlements.

🌵 "Visitors will have to journey for more than an hour by road and then on foot to reach the work, set within the rugged landscape beyond the northern heritage sites of Al Zubarah Fort and Ain Mohammed. Those lingering at dusk will be rewarded with the heightened experience of the light changing around the monumental sculptures and (as per the work’s title) their shadows travelling across the earth. Eliasson describes the installation as “an invitation to resync with the planet”."

🎤 It was a while ago when I was sorting through

🎤 It was a while ago when I was sorting through material for my first full-length musical poetry, aka jazzoetry album, when I came across three poems I had already recorded with some of Los Angeles' finest jazz musicians.
🎧 Listening back to them with fresh ears, I suddenly felt that they were thematically so different from the other pieces I was writing for the album, that I decided to release these three pieces separately. The Bandcamp link is in my bio!
